Harry Barnes
Executive Director

I grew up in both London, UK, and Nigeria—experiences that gave me an early appreciation for diverse cultures and perspectives. I began my professional career as a zoology technician at the University of London before joining the Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences (BIOS), where I served first as Technical Manager and later as Director of Operations.
After 15 years helping to develop and operate BIOS, I relocated to Panama to become Director of Science Support at the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute. A decade later, I joined the University of California’s Bodega Marine Laboratory as Associate Director.
Throughout my career, I travelled extensively, particularly throughout the Americas, and developed collaborations with scientific institutions around the world. I also served for 10 years as Executive Director of the Association of Marine Laboratories of the Caribbean.
In 2003, I retired from my full-time career building and operating scientific research institutions and moved to Salt Spring Island. Since then, I have operated my own consulting company, focusing primarily on construction project management and the strategic oversight of building and infrastructure projects.
In 2021, I became Executive Director of GISRA. In addition to overseeing the day-to-day management and ongoing renovation of Meadowbrook, I am closely involved in planning the future of GISRA’s Kings Lane property. Our vision is to develop the site to provide 50 units of affordable housing while significantly expanding the existing medical clinic.
